The VPRO approached me to create an illustration for an article about someone’s extraordinary relationship with a hare. While working on it, I let myself be guided by the fragments and impressions I picked up from the text. Chloe shared a unique bond with her hare, but I also learned that the hare has long been regarded as a noble creature and, across various mythologies, as something mysterious and almost sacred.
The fact that the hare continues to appear in our language and folklore, while we actually know so little about it, only adds to that sense of mystery. That’s why I surrounded it with a golden line, almost like an aura. I chose to depict the hare itself in blue to emphasize its elusive, almost ghostlike presence.
