Last year I worked with Volcom and this series came out of it.

I based the series on a poetic phrase I got from Volcom. From there, I explored how to express man’s and nature’s encounters in images. I soon arrived at dances, flowers, animals and fantasy figures made of stone. Everything had to have a vibrating atmosphere so that the images seemed to dance; that way, it also invited my audience to dance. At least, that’s what I hope.

The illustrations are printed on shirts, jumpers and trousers. And are sold worldwide. Shop windows were also decorated with my designs in quite a few cities.

Amsterdam-based fashion house Bonne Suits and I collaborated on a unique series of seven suits. These suits are hand-painted and sold in Bonne’s shop in Amsterdam. For this series, I drew various animals and icons; in such a way as if they were divine. Slightly inspired by tarot and old packaging materials; therefore, the imagery speaks to people on a deeper level. The material offered much resistance to the stiff cotton fabric, making the images look wild and robust. I fully accepted this, which allowed a certain wildness in work. Perhaps my own wilderness projected on these suits. I, therefore, hope that the people who see this can also get in touch with their inner wilderness!

De Zaak is the most cozy and least pretentious café in Utrecht, where everyone feels at home. Truly a special place. It is visited by coffee drinkers, artists, musicians, cleaners, cab drivers and businessmen who cannot find their way between private and work. I worked in this café as a night barman (2015). That made it an honour for me to design the new shirt for De Zaak! The idea was two talking birds sitting together on a stick but looking away from each other. That’s a suggestion for sitting at the bar. They are a kind of birds of paradise, the same kind as De Zaak’s audience.

I created a t-shirt for Paradiso. More information in the words of Paradiso follow below.

“Walhalla (Paradiso) presents their fourth release with a new t-shirt designed by Bob Mollema. Walhalla is a project involving several artists, designers and performers.

Bob Mollema, born in Bennekom in 1990, is an illustrator, artist and musician. He works worldwide with parties who appreciate nature and its relationship to humans, like himself. Inspired by ancient nature religions and mythological motifs, he also draws on modern art, underground comics and old packaging such as Indian matchboxes or French detergent boxes.

He translates his sources of inspiration to his audience by exploring the visual language of ancient civilisations. Materials mainly consist of chalk, pencil or oil paint.
In addition to independent projects, he works for international clients such as Volcom, Bonne Suits, National Geographic, VPRO, De Volkskrant and Paradiso.”

Incubu is a Spanish clothing brand which collaborates with various artists worldwide. They are inspired by folklore, legends and mythologies, weird tales, horror films and the general world of the occult. We got on well together in this, so they approached me to create a series of three illustrations. For this series, I was richly inspired by the world of folk horror, which resulted in a representation of an aristocratic vampire, a crude werewolf, and a mini-series of visual elements from the 1973 version of the film Wickerman. The illustrations were printed on good quality t-shirts made in Portugal.

Roadburn Festival asked me to create an illustration that captures my Roadburn feeling. I know what the Roadburn feeling is as I played there with my band Fluisteraars in 2024 in front of a large audience in a beautiful old dome hall. Besides being an artist, I also visited the festival that year. As a visitor, I discovered that I knew very few names on the line-up but discovered a lot. Like walking around and finding little treasures each time. For my illustration, I transformed those treasures into star-like flowers that a person picks up each time. That’s how I envisioned the Roadburn feeling; you walk from place to place and collect a bouquet of stars that act as personal treasures.

The artwork was printed on t-shirts, hoodies and bags.

Volcom came to me a second time, offering a single line from a poem as the seed for a new collection. Something about it felt like a spark—quiet, but insistent. From that line, a vivid world started to unfold. I saw colourful warriors moving through shifting skies, cosmic mushrooms glowing under starlight, strange figures in motion, and moments of love suspended in space.

The designs became part of that vision—pieces pulled from a place where colour tells the story and form follows feeling. The collection grew into something alive, strange, and bright.

Once again, it’s found its way into skate shops around the world—each display window a small opening into this vibrant universe.
